The driverless future is now Uber testing in Pittsburgh.

A driverless Hybrid Ford Fusion is being tested in Pittsburgh this week by Uber’s Advanced Technology Center.  For now, there will be a passenger in the car monitoring activities.  The car will be mapping the environment with radars, laser scanners and high resolution cameras.

Uber is touting safety statistics in the rollout.  94% of car accidents are due to human error, and Uber is attempting to solve this problem.  Not spoken about however, is the fate of Uber drivers.

Local officials have been generally supportive of the initiative, including a glowing statement from the Mayor.

Now we’re taking another step forward, this time as home to Uber’s Advanced Technologies Center, where some of the world’s leading innovators are helping to shape the future of transportation. We’re excited that Uber has chosen the Steel City as they explore new technologies that can improve people’s lives — through increased road safety, less congestion, and more efficient and smarter cities.”
